Have you ever wondered if your home is safe from electrical fires? Electrical fires can be caused by a number of things. Here are just a few that you should be aware of. 

Consider having old worn out receptacles and/or wiring replaced. 

Don't overload a circuit. If you need additional outlets call a licensed electrician to add more outlets to your home. 

Do you have old appliances that have frayed cords? Consider buying newer appliances to prevent the possibility of a fire in your home.

Maintaining your hot water heater may increase the efficiency and possibly the life span. Here are a few things you can do to help. 

There is a valve located near the top of the water heater called a TPR valve. This valve will have a pipe leading away from it. Be sure to place a bucket under the pipe and shut of the power and the cold water supply, Then lift the valve to let a little of the water out and let go. If the water does not stop flowing then the valve will need to be replaced. 

Wrap the tank with and pipes. Don't forget to wrap the cold water pipes as well as this will prevent the pipes from condensation in the summer. 

Draining the tank and washing out the sediment until clear water comes out will increase the lifespan of the heater. This should be done yearly. 

Check to see if the anode rod needs to be replaced every year.

Know the Dangers of Smoke and Fire Damage

Have you ever heard the term Puff Back? This term is used when your heating system misfires. If your heating system is not regularly cleaned, the unburned fuel may accumulate in the combustion chamber, causing it to misfire.

When the heating system has a "puff back" soot is released into the air through your heating system. Buildings and contents can be damaged as well as the heating system. This puff back could cause the stack pipe from being disconnected allowing even more soot to enter your home. There are many things to consider when determining what can be saved and what must be discarded. First thing to consider is the cleanliness of the water. For example if the water came from a sewage back up then all items that were damaged would need to be discarded. If the source of the water was from a sink, those items may be able to be cleaned.

The next step to consider would be the amount of the water as well as how long the water issue has gone unaddressed. Water that has been in the home and not addressed can cause health effects. Certain types of material, plastic, glass and metal can easily be salvaged. While other items such as gypsum board, carpet and drywall are easily permeated and tend to suffer the most damage and are usually replaced.

Microburst? Never heard of it.

Microbursts, also called "downbursts," are a sudden downward burst of wind from the base of a thunderstorm. The air can rush towards the ground at speeds of 60 MPH before impacting the surface and spreading out in all directions. Winds at the surface can exceed 100 MPH in the strongest microbursts, often causing extensive tree and building damage.

As the name suggests, microbursts tend to affect a small area, no larger than a few square miles in most cases. The intense damage these wind events leave behind can cause residents to think they had a tornado. While weak tornadoes and microbursts can produce similar amounts of damage, there is a marked swirl in tornado debris on the ground when viewed from above, while microbursts produce damage in a starburst pattern, with straight-line winds radiating away from the point of impact.

Two Types of Microbursts
There are two types of microbursts—dry microbursts and wet microbursts—each native to certain parts of the United States.

Dry Microbursts
Drier climates, such as Denver, experience dry microbursts. Dry microbursts hit the ground without any precipitation, making them virtually impossible to see unless they kick up dust and dirt at the surface. Dry air entrainment is basically the only process driving these wind events.

Wet Microbursts
East of the Rockies, especially in the southeastern United States, wet microbursts are dominant. Wet microbursts form from both dry air entrainment (causing cold air to sink towards the ground) and water loading (weight of the rain dragging the air). Seen from a distance, wet microbursts look like an upside-down mushroom cloud—a narrow rain shaft extending from the cloud to the ground, with a large burst of wind-driven water and dirt puffing away from the point of impact at the surface

We all think we are safe in our homes. However, many of us do not realize that there may be things in your home that could cause a fire. After all the most important thing to all of us is keeping our families and our property safe. 

Here is a list of things you should look for. 

*Check your smoke/carbon detectors. These items should be checked every year to see if it needs to be replaced and twice a year the batteries should be replaced

*Keep flammable items such as kitchen towels away from the stove as they can easily catch fire quickly. 

* Don't overload your extension cords. Overloading extension cords can lead to an electrical fire.

*Keep clothing and other flammables away form your gas hot water heater as they could ignite when the water heater cycles on. 

*Clean your stove often. Leaving grease buildup on your stove could cause a fire and can get out of hand very quickly. 

*Fireplaces should have the chimney swept once a year. This helps remove any soot and debris that may have built up. 

*Loose electrical outlets should be replaced or fixed in order to prevent an electrical fire. 

*Antiques: be sure to check the wiring on any antique items as the wires may become brittle over time which could fuel a fire. 

*Electronics: do not leave electronics on flammable materials such as bedding. They have been known to cause fires when they heat up. 

* Dust: those little dust bunnies under the bed can ignite quickly and spread a fire throughout your home. Also check to make sure there is no dust inside your electrical outlets, as the tiniest spark could start a fire. 

*Having any type of glass other than windows in direct sunlight could combust due to the direct sunray light. 

*Dryer lint is extremely flammable and because of that you should check your exhaust hose on your dryer yearly.

Owning a restaurant can be very stressful. From dealing with deliveries, making sure the cooks make everything correctly to dealing with the customers. Having to close your business due to a fire can be very detrimental to your bottom line. Here are some ways in which you can reduce your likelihood of a fire breaking out in your kitchen. 

*Grease: Clean up grease daily, as it is very combustible. 

*Maintain your cooking equipment, and make sure you have the proper fire suppression system installed. The fire suppression system should be professionally inspected.

*Making sure your sprinkler system is in working order. 

*Having your fire extinguishers inspected yearly and making sure you have enough of them can help your crew put the fire out, hopefully, with minimum damage. 

*Training your staff to properly deal with different types of fires could also help minimize the damage. 

*Keeping all flammables away from flames. 

*Electrical fires can start due to frayed cables or damaged outlets. Periodic inspections by a licensed electrician should be conducted to look for other electrical issues that may not be obvious. 

*Buildup can easily cause a fire in the ventilation system. Have your ductwork, hood and the fan inspected and cleaned regularly. 

*Instruct your employees to NEVER throw water on a grease fire. Doing this will only cause the fire to become enraged. 

*NEVER allow employees to dispose of their cigarette buts inside the facility. There may still be embers which can cause a fire to start.

Helpful tips to help you prevent mold from growing in your home.

Mold can lead to health issues for you and your family. Here are a few ways in which you can help prevent mold from growing in your home.

Leaks: Checking for leaks around your doors and windows. If you notice any water entering your home from around your windows and/or doors it is recommended that you get them repaired as quickly as possible. Be sure that the area has been thoroughly dried prior to repair.Roof leaks are best detected during a rain storm. By checking your attic space to look for any leakage, you can quickly correct the issue before the problems becomes a huge headache.

Ventilation: Bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms should be properly vented. Bathroom ventilation is one of the areas that mold likes to grow. Without a ventilation system in place this becomes molds best friend. Be sure to check the ventilation system every three months to ensure that the pipe leading to the outside is securely fastened to both ends. Dryers should also be checked to make sure the venting pipe is attached at both ends of the pipe. Kitchen venting should be cleaned every month to prevent grease build up. Be sure to check your filter if you have a microwave with an exhaust to see if they need to be replaced.

Humidity: Maintain a low humidity level in your home by running a dehumidifier or air conditioner.

Dryer Vent: The dryer vent can build up and cause a fire if they are not properly maintained. We recommend that you clean or replace the hose once a year to ensure there is no buildup. Also be sure to vacuum out the back of the dryer to ensure that there is no left over debris.

Whether it’s your home, a commercial building or any other property, mold needs to be controlled. Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposures include allergic reactions, asthma, and other respiratory complaints.

Protect your family, your property and your investment by removing mold from your home and taking preventative steps to make sure mold doesn’t have an environment to grow. Waterproofing your basement is one way to make sure mold has a very unlikely chance to grow.

Here are some things you should know about mold:

• There is no practical way to eliminate 100% of the mold and mold spores in your home or properties basement. The only way to control basement mold growth is to control moisture.
• If mold is a problem in your home or properties basement, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture, typically by basement waterproofing.
• Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.

From a cost perspective, the labor of invasive remediation is somewhat more expensive, but the cost of reconstruction and repair that is necessary following the removal of mold damaged building materials presents a marked difference.

Do you have water damage at your Western Mass home? Did you know that you will almost certainly have insurance for the water damage, decontamination of materials and drying equipment necessary to dry your house. You should also have coverage for any mold damage, mold testing, mold clearance testing or mold removal necessary to decontaminate any affected materials. Finally, your policy should pay for the water damage restoration or water damage reconstruction that will return your house to its original condition.

All of this is true, unless, you make one simple mistake. You call your water damage a FLOOD! In the real world, when have water in your house, you call it flood damage. In insurance land, a flood is water that comes in from the outside or your structure not the inside (pipe leak, washing machine overflow, sewer backup, septic tank backup, air condition overflow, tub overflow or roof leak). For example, the creek overflows its banks or a hurricane dumps 20" of rain and water rushes in from the outside of your house. No homeowners insurance policies cover flood damage. Flood damage  coverage in the United States is run by the National Flood Insurance Program. Claims are often reported directly to them although they will sometimes use local insurance companies to receive the calls and inspect the claims for them for a fee.

The important thing to remember is that if you report you water damage as a flood your loss will get denied and you will receive no coverage

Flooding from rising waters is rare, but other causes can lead to destruction as well.  Even if that damage is hidden and slowly progressing.  Crawl spaces, attics, and basements are especially prone to water damage.  You’ll likely spot an appliance leak fairly quick, but problems such as those inside walls can remain completely hidden for weeks or even months.  So keep an eye out for any signs of discoloration, dampness, mold, and odors.  Old water stains suggest an intermittent problem.  If you find damp areas, act immediately.

Many of the people who call us are quite certain of where the leak is coming from, only to find out later that they were wrong.  That’s because water can travel quite a distance, even upwards, before it makes itself known.  So a professional inspection or leak detection is usually better than just fixing what may or may not be the main cause.

Building Leaks
