Do you know of someone who has had an Electrical Fire in their Home?

5/9/2022 (Permalink)

Have you ever wondered if your home is safe from electrical fires? Electrical fires can be caused by a number of things. Here are just a few that you should be aware of.

Consider having old worn out receptacles and/or wiring replaced.

Don't overload a circuit. If you need additional outlets call a licensed electrician to add more outlets to your home.

Do you have old appliances that have frayed cords? Consider buying newer appliances to prevent the possibility of a fire in your home.

Be sure to check the recommended bulb wattage for all of your lighting fixtures. Never use anything higher than what the fixture recommends.

Always unplug space heaters when you are not at home or when you are sleeping. Never have your space heater to close to curtains or any other flammable items.

If you do have a fire, SERVPRO will be here to restore your home properly.

Time to check your hot water heater!!!

5/9/2022 (Permalink)

Maintaining your hot water heater may increase the efficiency and possibly the life span. Here are a few things you can do to help.

There is a valve located near the top of the water heater called a TPR valve. This valve will have a pipe leading away from it. Be sure to place a bucket under the pipe and shut of the power and the cold water supply, Then lift the valve to let a little of the water out and let go. If the water does not stop flowing then the valve will need to be replaced.

Wrap the tank with and pipes. Don't forget to wrap the cold water pipes as well as this will prevent the pipes from condensation in the summer.

Draining the tank and washing out the sediment until clear water comes out will increase the lifespan of the heater. This should be done yearly.

Check to see if the anode rod needs to be replaced every year.

Know the Dangers of Smoke and Fire Damage

5/6/2022 (Permalink)

Fires are devastating on so many levels, from the damage caused by the flames, to the properties that get reduced to ashes, to the injuries resulting from smoke exposure, heat and escaping the devastation. There are hidden dangers created by fire and smoke that can linger long after the flames have died and the air clears up.

A Lingering Damage

During a home fire, the smoke and heat permeates throughout the house and can embed itself deep into your furniture, wood, insulation, and other materials. This strong odor often lingers and can be so strong that it causes nausea and coughing even days after the fire has been put out.

When a fire burns through toxic materials including plastic, the airborne pollutants can settle into your insulation and duct work. Without proper fire restoration, these waste products can linger and make you sick.

IT STINKS!!!

Fire and smoke damage leaves an unpleasant odor in your furniture, carpets. drapes, and clothes that's difficult to remove. Unfortunately, though, simple washing or scrubbing with laundry detergent wont be enough to get rid of the smell. If you have smoke damage in your home, you'll need special equipment such as an ozone generator to get rid of the odor-and that's something only professionals like us have access to.

Also, the longer you wait, the worse it gets. If you leave it sitting long enough, you may never be able to get rid of the smell, or even salvage anything. Why take a chance on someone else cleaning your home, when SERVPRO of South Springfield/Agawam is specially trained to do so properly.

A Puff Back is when your heating system misfires.

5/6/2022 (Permalink)

Have you ever heard the term Puff Back? This term is used when your heating system misfires. If your heating system is not regularly cleaned, the unburned fuel may accumulate in the combustion chamber, causing it to misfire.

When the heating system has a "puff back" soot is released into the air through your heating system. Buildings and contents can be damaged as well as the heating system. This puff back could cause the stack pipe from being disconnected allowing even more soot to enter your home. As oil creates more soot than gas, the damage created by an oil furnace can be more severe. However, gas furnaces can also allow puff backs to occur.

When a puff back occurs it can allow soot to collect on your ceilings, walls, carpets as well as inside your heating vents. And of course all of your belongings inside your home.

Puff back prevention is essential to all homeowners as it can be expensive and often is not covered by your insurance. Be sure to have your furnace checked every year before firing it up.

Insist on getting the cleanup of a puff back done by professionals, SERVPRO can help.

Know the difference between salvageable from non-salvageable items.

5/6/2022 (Permalink)

There are many things to consider when determining what can be saved and what must be discarded. First thing to consider is the cleanliness of the water. For example if the water came from a sewage back up then all items that were damaged would need to be discarded. If the source of the water was from a sink, those items may be able to be cleaned.

The next step to consider would be the amount of the water as well as how long the water issue has gone unaddressed. Water that has been in the home and not addressed can cause health effects. Certain types of material, plastic, glass and metal can easily be salvaged. While other items such as gypsum board, carpet and drywall are easily permeated and tend to suffer the most damage and are usually replaced.

If an item is irreplaceable, then the decision would be left to the homeowner. We at SERVPRO® of South Springfield/Agawam would do our best to improve the condition of the piece to the best of our ability.

Damage caused by Thunderstorms!

5/5/2022 (Permalink)

Thunderstorms can cause damage to our homes and commercial buildings. High winds, lightning strikes and flash flooding and heavy snowfalls are always a possibility here in New England.

Did you know that it's the water that usually causes the most damage to your home or commercial building? While high winds can cause trees to knock over power lines or even just the tree into the home or building, it's the water that does the serious damage.

Water when left untreated can lead to mold growth, which can lead to health effects. Properly cleaning and drying your home or commercial building is key in preventing mold growth.

We here at SERVPRO have the professional equipment to thoroughly dry out your home or Commercial building and make sure that mold growth is not an issue. Rely on the professionals to do it right the first time.

Microburst? Never heard of it.

5/5/2022 (Permalink)

Dennis Mersereau explains

Microbursts, also called "downbursts," are a sudden downward burst of wind from the base of a thunderstorm. The air can rush towards the ground at speeds of 60 MPH before impacting the surface and spreading out in all directions. Winds at the surface can exceed 100 MPH in the strongest microbursts, often causing extensive tree and building damage.

As the name suggests, microbursts tend to affect a small area, no larger than a few square miles in most cases. The intense damage these wind events leave behind can cause residents to think they had a tornado. While weak tornadoes and microbursts can produce similar amounts of damage, there is a marked swirl in tornado debris on the ground when viewed from above, while microbursts produce damage in a starburst pattern, with straight-line winds radiating away from the point of impact.

Two Types of Microbursts
There are two types of microbursts—dry microbursts and wet microbursts—each native to certain parts of the United States.

Dry Microbursts
Drier climates, such as Denver, experience dry microbursts. Dry microbursts hit the ground without any precipitation, making them virtually impossible to see unless they kick up dust and dirt at the surface. Dry air entrainment is basically the only process driving these wind events.

Wet Microbursts
East of the Rockies, especially in the southeastern United States, wet microbursts are dominant. Wet microbursts form from both dry air entrainment (causing cold air to sink towards the ground) and water loading (weight of the rain dragging the air). Seen from a distance, wet microbursts look like an upside-down mushroom cloud—a narrow rain shaft extending from the cloud to the ground, with a large burst of wind-driven water and dirt puffing away from the point of impact at the surface

Is your home safe from fires?

5/5/2022 (Permalink)

We all think we are safe in our homes. However, many of us do not realize that there may be things in your home that could cause a fire. After all the most important thing to all of us is keeping our families and our property safe.

Here is a list of things you should look for.

*Check your smoke/carbon detectors. These items should be checked every year to see if it needs to be replaced and twice a year the batteries should be replaced

*Keep flammable items such as kitchen towels away from the stove as they can easily catch fire quickly.

* Don't overload your extension cords. Overloading extension cords can lead to an electrical fire.

*Keep clothing and other flammables away form your gas hot water heater as they could ignite when the water heater cycles on.

*Clean your stove often. Leaving grease buildup on your stove could cause a fire and can get out of hand very quickly.

*Fireplaces should have the chimney swept once a year. This helps remove any soot and debris that may have built up.

*Loose electrical outlets should be replaced or fixed in order to prevent an electrical fire.

*Antiques: be sure to check the wiring on any antique items as the wires may become brittle over time which could fuel a fire.

*Electronics: do not leave electronics on flammable materials such as bedding. They have been known to cause fires when they heat up.

* Dust: those little dust bunnies under the bed can ignite quickly and spread a fire throughout your home. Also check to make sure there is no dust inside your electrical outlets, as the tiniest spark could start a fire.

*Having any type of glass other than windows in direct sunlight could combust due to the direct sunray light.

*Dryer lint is extremely flammable and because of that you should check your exhaust hose on your dryer yearly.

These are just some of the ways you can help keep your family and home safe.

However, if you do have a fire SERVPRO can restore your home "Like it never even happened."

Restaurants and kitchen fires.

5/5/2022 (Permalink)

Owning a restaurant can be very stressful. From dealing with deliveries, making sure the cooks make everything correctly to dealing with the customers. Having to close your business due to a fire can be very detrimental to your bottom line. Here are some ways in which you can reduce your likelihood of a fire breaking out in your kitchen.

*Grease: Clean up grease daily, as it is very combustible.

*Maintain your cooking equipment, and make sure you have the proper fire suppression system installed. The fire suppression system should be professionally inspected.

*Making sure your sprinkler system is in working order.

*Having your fire extinguishers inspected yearly and making sure you have enough of them can help your crew put the fire out, hopefully, with minimum damage.

*Training your staff to properly deal with different types of fires could also help minimize the damage.

*Keeping all flammables away from flames.

*Electrical fires can start due to frayed cables or damaged outlets. Periodic inspections by a licensed electrician should be conducted to look for other electrical issues that may not be obvious.

*Buildup can easily cause a fire in the ventilation system. Have your ductwork, hood and the fan inspected and cleaned regularly.

*Instruct your employees to NEVER throw water on a grease fire. Doing this will only cause the fire to become enraged.

*NEVER allow employees to dispose of their cigarette buts inside the facility. There may still be embers which can cause a fire to start.

And last but not least have an escape plan, just in case of a fire. And practice to ensure all staff gets out safely.

My pipes burst!!! What do I do?

Pipe bursts are one of the main causes of water damage in your Greater Springfield home during the winter months.

Unfortunately most are not prepared for this kind of event in one's home. Here are some tips we at SERVPRO of South Springfield/Agawam can give you to reduce damages.

Common pipes that burst are ones that reside in your basement. Due to this is where pipes are most exposed in your home. One of the first things that should be done is shut the source of water off to prevent more water from flooding and doing more damage.

Third, be sure that your heat is set to at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit during the cold months to prevent frozen pipes. Your furnace and water heaters should be serviced to ensure that they are working properly during the winter/fall seasons.

If you do have water damage from frozen pipes, Call SERVPRO. We here at SERVPRO can help identify any hidden damages that cannot be seen with a visual inspection alone. With our technology we can ensure that all issues will be addressed and make it "Like it never even happened."

Commercial sewage prevention.

5/4/2022 (Permalink)

Sewage backup in your commercial building can be a total nightmare! Depending upon the amount of sewage and where it has entered the building could mean that the business gets shut down unit the waste is cleaned up.

Although there are ways in which the business owner can try to prevent these backups, there is never any guarantee that a backup would not occur.

For Example: There could be a policy that nothing except toilet paper gets flushed down the toilet. However, customers may not think there is anything wrong with it or not be aware that flushing anything other than just toilet paper can lead to a backup.

Make sure employees do not put food or grease down the drain. Food and grease can lead to clogs, which may eventually lead to a backup.

When a backup occurs in your commercial building SERVPRO of South Springfield/Agawam will be there to help you clean up the waste.

Helpful tips to help you prevent mold from growing in your home.

4/9/2021 (Permalink)

Mold can lead to health issues for you and your family. Here are a few ways in which you can help prevent mold from growing in your home.

Leaks: Checking for leaks around your doors and windows. If you notice any water entering your home from around your windows and/or doors it is recommended that you get them repaired as quickly as possible. Be sure that the area has been thoroughly dried prior to repair.Roof leaks are best detected during a rain storm. By checking your attic space to look for any leakage, you can quickly correct the issue before the problems becomes a huge headache.

Ventilation: Bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms should be properly vented. Bathroom ventilation is one of the areas that mold likes to grow. Without a ventilation system in place this becomes molds best friend. Be sure to check the ventilation system every three months to ensure that the pipe leading to the outside is securely fastened to both ends. Dryers should also be checked to make sure the venting pipe is attached at both ends of the pipe. Kitchen venting should be cleaned every month to prevent grease build up. Be sure to check your filter if you have a microwave with an exhaust to see if they need to be replaced.

Humidity: Maintain a low humidity level in your home by running a dehumidifier or air conditioner.

SERVPRO is certified to properly handle your mold remediation if the need arises.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!!!!

4/8/2021 (Permalink)

Spring is here! This is a perfect time to make that checklist of items to clean to help you keep your home safe. The following are three items we recommend you take a look at to properly maintain your home.

Dryer Vent: The dryer vent can build up and cause a fire if they are not properly maintained. We recommend that you clean or replace the hose once a year to ensure there is no buildup. Also be sure to vacuum out the back of the dryer to ensure that there is no left over debris.

Smoke/Fire/Carbon Detectors: These items are crucial in making sure your family is safe. Spring is a great time to replace batteries and or the entire units. Most devices have an expiration date on them to let you know when they need to be replaced.

Flue: Be sure to have your flue cleaned. We recommend hiring a chimney sweeper to ensure that it is done correctly.

How Smoke Damage affects a home

12/31/2019 (Permalink)

There’s no question that fires are deadly. In 2016, over 1.3 million fires took place in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). These fires caused 3,390 civilian deaths, 14,650 civilian injuries, and $10.6 billion in property damage. We all fear fire’s flames, but smoke from fires is also a deadly hazard—and it’s one many people don’t talk about. In addition to causing respiratory distress and even death, smoke can wreak havoc in a home. So how does smoke damage permeate a home, and what should you do if you experience smoke damage?

While smoke damage tends to be more apparent in areas affected by a fire, it usually doesn’t stop there. Smoke damage patterns can be erratic and often depend on the flow of air in your home at the time of the fire. From entering duct work to permeating curtains and furniture, smoke damage takes place in the same room where the fire occurred—and far beyond.

If not dealt with quickly, smoke damage will rapidly increase your restoration costs. That’s because when left untreated for long periods of time, smoke and soot from a fire can permeate surfaces and become increasingly difficult to remove. To help mitigate smoke damage if your home suffers a fire, call a restoration expert like SERVPRO right away. Restoration experts specialize in cleaning up soot and smoke damage — a difficult task that requires professionals. Even before the restoration professionals arrive, turn off your HVAC system to avoid the spread of smoke and soot. You may also open windows and doors to help increase good air flow. When SERVPRO experts are on site, they will clean and safeguard items that were exposed to the fire, help you organize and handle your insurance claims, and much more.

Fires can be devastating for home and business owners. It’s important to work with a company that understands smoke and fire damage restoration so you can avoid further damage to your belongings and your property. Only an expert will know how to help you prevent further damage while minimizing the cost of fire and smoke damage to your home. Always be wary of contractors who show up on your doorstep and talk about their fire restoration services. Often they can cause more damage than they fix!

Remember, SERVPRO of South Springfield/Agawam is available 24/7 for emergency services, and technicians can be on site promptly to help you get the restoration process started properly. With specialized cleaning methods and equipment, combined with skilled and trained employees, you’ll recover more quickly and damage restoration costs will be minimized.

Things Everyone Should Know About Mold And Their Basement

12/31/2019 (Permalink)

Everyone knows mold is bad but everyone does not know the health risks of mold in your basement and what the effects can be.

Whether it’s your home, a commercial building or any other property, mold needs to be controlled. Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposures include allergic reactions, asthma, and other respiratory complaints.

Protect your family, your property and your investment by removing mold from your home and taking preventative steps to make sure mold doesn’t have an environment to grow. Waterproofing your basement is one way to make sure mold has a very unlikely chance to grow.

Here are some things you should know about mold:

  • There is no practical way to eliminate 100% of the mold and mold spores in your home or properties basement. The only way to control basement mold growth is to control moisture.
  • If mold is a problem in your home or properties basement, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture, typically by basement waterproofing.
  • Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
  • Reducing the indoor humidity of your home will decrease mold growth by: venting bathrooms, dryers, and other moisture-generating sources to the outside, using air conditioners and de-humidifiers, increasing ventilation and using a sump pump to pump out excess water from your basement.
  • Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours of them getting wet to prevent mold growth.
  • Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.
  • Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, foundation walls, or basement floors) by basement waterproofing.
  • In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting, remodel or refinish a basement. You must be sure the mold problem is taken care of before investing a large amount of money into a basement remodeling project.
  • Molds can be found almost anywhere in your basement. Mold can be under the carpet, in the drywall, on furniture, etc. Mold can also grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present.

Invasive V. Non-Invasive Mold Remediation

11/7/2019 (Permalink)

Maintaining your Springfield home and protecting your family from avoidable health issues  are two good reasons to evaluate the potential impact of mold on your home. Many families wait until the spread of mold contamination is widespread before acting to correct this issue. In many cases a small amount of prevention can go a long way in avoiding high damage and expenses caused by mold in the future.

After finding mold in your home, there are two general paths a remediation company can take. This can be invasive or non-invasive in nature depending on the level of contamination in your home.

Non-Invasive Remediation

This remediation process consists of HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) vacuuming, sanding, surface wiping and using an HEPA air scrubber. Most building materials contaminated with surface mold such as wood, glass, metal, and ceramic can be efficiently decontaminated with these processes and pass certified third party IEP testing such as air sampling and surface testing. Surface mold is often caused by a high relative humidity (Rh) inside your home.

Invasive Remediation

This remediation process consists of removing and discarding porous building materials that cannot be decontaminated through non-invasive means. Moisture infiltration often causes moisture to penetrate walls and generate mold inside wall cavities. Generally, this is caused by moisture entering your home’s exterior envelope through compromised roofing, siding or an interior water source, such as piping or faucets. Seepage, flooding and leaks create a tremendous mess for the homeowner. These problems result in severe building material damage that requires some level of invasive remediation. From a cost perspective, the labor of invasive remediation is somewhat more expensive, but the cost of reconstruction and repair that is necessary following the removal of mold damaged building materials presents a marked difference.

Got Water Damage? Here's how to avoid a denial.

9/18/2019 (Permalink)

Do you have water damage at your Western Mass home? Did you know that you will almost certainly have insurance for the water damage, decontamination of materials and drying equipment necessary to dry your house. You should also have coverage for any mold damage, mold testing, mold clearance testing or mold removal necessary to decontaminate any affected materials. Finally, your policy should pay for the water damage restoration or water damage reconstruction that will return your house to its original condition.

All of this is true, unless, you make one simple mistake. You call your water damage a FLOOD! In the real world, when have water in your house, you call it flood damage. In insurance land, a flood is water that comes in from the outside or your structure not the inside (pipe leak, washing machine overflow, sewer backup, septic tank backup, air condition overflow, tub overflow or roof leak). For example, the creek overflows its banks or a hurricane dumps 20" of rain and water rushes in from the outside of your house. No homeowners insurance policies cover flood damage. Flood damage  coverage in the United States is run by the National Flood Insurance Program. Claims are often reported directly to them although they will sometimes use local insurance companies to receive the calls and inspect the claims for them for a fee.

The important thing to remember is that if you report you water damage as a flood your loss will get denied and you will receive no coverage

Fire and Smoke Damage can be Dangerous

9/9/2019 (Permalink)

Fires are devastating on so many levels, from the damage caused by the flames, to the properties that get reduced to ashes, to the injuries resulting from smoke exposure, heat and escaping the devastation. There are hidden dangers created by fire and smoke that can linger long after the flames have died and he air clears up.

Without proper fire restoration, these wasate products can linger and make you sick.

It Smells!

Water leaks can be small but expensive

8/15/2019 (Permalink)

When your faucet suddenly breaks and water gushes all over the bathroom, you call the plumber to get the damage fixed. But, when you’re dealing with small drips under your sink, you wait another day or even weeks to repair the leak.

While it might not seem so bad in the beginning, these small problems can become too big for you to handle. When you realize it, you’re dealing with a major headache from all the damage and expenses that one simple leak has caused.

Monthly Water Expenses Increase

That dripping sink will affect your water bill. Drips from a leaky faucet or sink unchecked can add up to a lot of money on your monthly water bill.

A Huge Amount of Water Goes to Waste

Instead of saving resources for extremely dry seasons, you’re letting all the water go to waste with a small leak in your bathroom or kitchen fixtures. For every drop of water from a leaky faucet or sink, you’re wasting gallons of water per day and when you multiply that by 30 days in a month, the number can get staggering.

Extensive Damage in Your Home

If you think that small leak will stay small, think again. The damage from the leak can extend to other parts of your home. Drips under your sink may cause the thin metal drains to rust over time or weaken the cabinet or floor. This will leave you with unnecessary and expenses repairs later on.

Don’t let a simple leak turn into a big problem that affects the rest of your house. If you start seeing signs of leaks in your home, contact our experts for immediate water damage repair in the Greater Springfield area. Our experts will take care of the problems and ensure your carpet, drywall, and floors remain in good condition.

HOME DISASTER PREVENTION – TIPS TO HELP PROTECT YOUR HOME

7/30/2019 (Permalink)

When you are leaving for vacation, the last thing you want to have to worry about is something happening to your home. While you can’t always prevent disasters from happening, you can do some things to help protect your home while you are gone. Here are some tips from professionals:

ASK SOMEONE TO STOP BY

If you have family around or a neighbor you trust, have them check on the house while you are away. Just having someone check on your house every couple of days could help prevent some of the disasters that could happen in your home.

CLEAN UP

Make sure that your refrigerator isn’t left full of food that could spoil while you’re gone or you may end up with a moldy fridge that smells awful. Make sure all your trash cans are empty as well.

Clear your gutters and storm drains. If debris blocks the rain from flowing, it can accumulate and seep into your basement or ground floor

SHUT OFF WATER MAINS OR SUPPLY LINES

If you don’t have a sprinkler system that needs to be running while you are gone, consider shutiing off the water main before you go on vacation. This may be a bit extreme but many homeowners have come home from vacation to find their property flooded, and thousands of dollars of water damage.

If you do have sprinklers that need to be run, consider turning off the supply lines to toilets, sinks, and appliances.

PROTECT AGAINST DROPPING TEMPS WITHOUT THE HUGE ELECTRIC BILL

If you go on vacation in the winter, you don’t want your pipes to freeze and burst. On the same hand you don’t want a huge electric bill. Think about getting a programmable thermostat and set it to 4 or 5 degrees below/above your normal setting (should not be below 55 in the winter). If you want to be really savvy, get a smart thermostat. Then you can check on and adjust the temperature of your home from anywhere.

GET AN ALARM SYSTEM

Having an alarm system can help you if someone breaks into your home, but if you get a good one with environmental sensors it can help you with other things as well. The sensors can detect moisture changes in the air, and in some cases even sync up with your CO2, and smoke detectors to alert emergency services if anything goes wrong.

Your vacation should be spent having fun and relaxing, not worrying about your home and what condition it will be in when you return. Take the time to prepare before you leave, and have someone check on it to help prevent a lot of major disasters.

Understanding the Characteristics of Water Damage

7/30/2019 (Permalink)

Regardless of the cause, we can rapidly recognize and act upon the signs of water damage to your property and its contents. After addressing the cause of the problem, we will promptly remove any salvageable materials before carrying out emergency services and working closely with insurance companies to help ensure a seamless transition back to normalcy.

If your residential or commercial property has been affected by water damage, it is essential that you call a Water Restoration Company immediately. Moving water caused by a broken water heater or a burst pipe can spread quickly throughout your property, permanently staining things like carpets, upholstery, books and records. Items such as wooden furniture can swell, sometimes even disintegrating, and unprotected metal surfaces can also be tarnished. For this reason among others, water should be removed as soon as possible.

Long-term effects of water damage include a development of bacteria and mold, along with an unpleasant odor and increased risk of allergens. If left unattended, structural damage to the property may also occur. Things like warping and splitting frames, and/or windows and doors. However, our team addressing the problem within the first few hours will help reduce the degree of permanent damage and the consequent increased restoration costs.

Sometimes water damage might not be immediately apparent, and may only be characterized by an unpleasant odor or growth of microbial organisms on surfaces around the affected area. Even a small leak can cause severe damage if it is not dealt with in a timely manner.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST MOLD REMEDIATION COMPANY

7/29/2019 (Permalink)

Once mold appears in your home, knowing which mold remediation company to choose can be overwhelming. To begin with, it is not a DIY job and you shouldn’t necessarily choose the company that is closest to you either. The company you hire should be one that stands behind their work. Here are some tips on how to determine the best mold remediation company for the job.

Mold Remediation is Not a DIY Project

If water damage happens and a mold situation arises, many may view it as a small outbreak, something treatable with store-bought products. In some cases, it may be possible to clean or treat minor outbreaks of mold, but generally cleaning a surface area of mold does not necessarily mean you have remediated the mold beneath the surface. It is one thing if you have been flooded or if a pipe bursts, but in some cases water damage to a structure may have gone on over an extended period of time, undetected behind a wall or under a floorboard, causing mold to gradually grow from the inside out, and spread before it surfaces. Cleaning mold is not a DIY project.

The “behind the walls” damage to residential properties after water intrusion occurs and the ventilation system has been contaminated, can pose many dangers and problems. Once that occurs, the mold issue can become “toxic,” with mold spores blown throughout the building, landing on every surface, through the wall and attic insulation, through the ductwork, your HVAC system, and even into your lungs. To prevent the structural spread of mold requires the help of a professional mold removal company to assess the damage, and then treat the mold problem.

Having a professional mold remediation company make an assessment of your property after water intrusion results in a mold outbreak is the best decision for you, your family, and your property. How to choose that company is just as important of a decision. Here are several tips to consider when choosing the best mold remediation company for your needs:

Do Your Research

Finding the best mold remediation company begins by doing research. Start with getting referrals from people you trust. Then, read through some of the testimonials on the company’s website. Contact some of those people if possible. Sites such as Yelp or Google share reviews, good and bad included.

Do not expect the first company that comes up on a Google search to be the “best.” Those types of searches can be easily manipulated. Do not expect the closest company to you to be any better than the company in the next town over. In each case, it is unlikely you will “chance” upon the best. The company you want is the one that stands behind its work. It will take some research to find them.

Asking the Right Questions

The first thing to look for in a mold remediation company is whether or not they stand behind their work.

Next, ask if the company if it is insured and licensed. Look for a company that is fully licensed and has the proper certifications to perform the job as required. The staff should be trained and highly experienced. Mold remediation requires a high degree of expertise. The person actually overseeing the work on your property should be able to communicate with you through the entire mold remediation and removal process each step of the way.

Finally, a company’s certification is just as important as its reputation. SERVPRO of South Springfield/Agawam is an IICRC certified Firm. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC), is the institution that sets the standards and certifications for the restoration industries. More importantly, these are the standards that most insurance companies adhere to.

Common Causes of Water Damage

7/29/2019 (Permalink)

Flooding from rising waters is rare, but other causes can lead to destruction as well.  Even if that damage is hidden and slowly progressing.  Crawl spaces, attics, and basements are especially prone to water damage.  You’ll likely spot an appliance leak fairly quick, but problems such as those inside walls can remain completely hidden for weeks or even months.  So keep an eye out for any signs of discoloration, dampness, mold, and odors.  Old water stains suggest an intermittent problem.  If you find damp areas, act immediately.

Many of the people who call us are quite certain of where the leak is coming from, only to find out later that they were wrong.  That’s because water can travel quite a distance, even upwards, before it makes itself known.  So a professional inspection or leak detection is usually better than just fixing what may or may not be the main cause.

Building Leaks

Have you noticed water stains on the ceiling?  Roof leaks are probably the cause, but not always.  Besides a leaky pipe in the attic, there could be condensation on plumbing (or just about any surface for that matter).  With a clogged gutter or blocked downspout water can make its way into the attic then down to the ceiling.  Roof leakage isn’t always due to bad or missing shingles.  Damaged or poorly installed flashing around chimneys, vent pipes, and joints can also become a problem.  The seals around skylights can get old, and the skylight itself can crack.

Other common building leaks occur at the seals on windows and doors, as well as at caulking where they join the wall.  Siding and stucco can be damaged, and the joints between a deck and the house are also prone to leaks.

Plumbing and Appliances

A bit surprisingly, clothes washers are the #1 cause of home flooding and water damage.  Sure, they sometimes overflow or their drain gets clogged.  But old washer hoses can burst and release several hundred gallons of water before you even know it. Water heaters are another contender.  Valves and fittings can leak, and in extreme conditions, the tank can rupture. That can release 40, 50, or more gallons in a matter of seconds.

Just about any appliance that uses water can leak.  So don’t neglect dishwashers, garbage disposals, and ice makers.  A plumbing leak that seems small may be more serious than you think.  Leaky pipes can easily release a few hundred gallons per month.  Sump pumps can fail, and bathtubs can overflow.  And whether you have central A/C or a window air conditioner, condensation can flow to where it can slowly cause mold and other water damage.

Humidity and Condensation

As you may have gathered, what seems like a leak may, in fact, be condensation.  That’s a common problem with toilets in bathrooms with showers.  It’s important to make sure that all kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans are working properly and that their vents are free of obstructions.  Otherwise, you may find yourself needing mold remediation and repairs.

Tips To Prevent Mold Growth In Your Laundry Room

9/21/2016 (Permalink)

Mold Can Grow in Many Parts of the Home

Many homeowners realize that there is more than one way to protect their home. Often, a home is the largest investment a person will make in their life, and protecting it should be a priority. However, one culprit that many homeowners neglect to keep under control lives in both the outdoors and inside almost every home in the United States. That culprit is mold. Mold Can Live Anywhere There Is Moisture.

In Hampden County, mold damage can result rather quickly if mold colonies are present. Mold often hides where it is not easily detected. This is because sunlight is a natural enemy of mold. Mold thrives best in damp or moist environments that receive little or no sunlight, and where natural substances it can consume are present.

Common Area for Mold Growth One area that is often found to harbor mold is the laundry area. Damp clothing, either still soiled and waiting to be washed, or clothing that has been removed from the dryer too soon, or left wet in the washing machine can cause mold to grow. These small amounts of mold can rapidly spread to other areas of the home as well. If there is a ventilation intake in the laundry area, mold can quickly enter when the ventilation system is turned on, and be whisked to all different areas of your home. One area that should be looked at when searching for mold growth in the laundry area of any home is the washer and dryer. Dryer ducts need to be vented outdoors. Lots of moisture is released into the air during the drying process. If there is a humidity problem in the laundry area, a dehumidifier might be an excellent option to help control how much humidity is present on an ongoing basis. Families who have front loading washing machines should note that many of these have been found to harbor large colonies of mold. These should be inspected, particularly if a musty odor is present, especially in freshly washed clothing.

Call Our Professional and Certified Team. If you feel mold is a problem in your home, you should call our professional and certified teams to help you have mold damage checked. Repairs are less costly when found earlier, and can help protect your investment in your home, as well as your family's health. We can perform remediation services any mold damage. Call us at SERVPRO of South Springfield/Agawam, 24/7, at (413) 372-4115. We will schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience to inspect and detect mold growths that may cause mold damage in your home.

Did You Know there is a science behind drying?

9/21/2016 (Permalink)

Did You Know...?

Did you know there is actually a science behind the process of drying? Having the knowledge of psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition.

While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, the team at SERVPRO of South Springfield/Agawam is trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry-approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages. If your business or home suffers a water damage, SERVPRO of South Springfield/Agawam will:

  • Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.
  • Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether the materials are drying properly.
  • Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

What Exactly Does It Mean To Help "Speed Up Mother Nature?"

A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material–but only if the air is, indeed, drier. The only problem is, nature takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out.

SERVPRO of South Springfield/Agawam Has The Tools and Equipment To Help

SERVPRO of South Springfield/Agawam has the tools and equipment to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces like inside walls, and much more. We also use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, and a proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.

The Bottom Line?

In Agawam, Springfield, Longmeadow, Hampden County and beyond, our team has the training and equipment to help make water damage “Like it never even happened.”

Does Your Hampden County Home Have A Mold Problem?

9/13/2016 (Permalink)

In Hampden County, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
